　仮定法で便利な表現のひとつに if only があります。

　(1) If only I could speakto him. (かれに話しかけることが出来れば良いのになあ。)

  (2) If only I hadn't get angry at that time. (あの時腹を立てなければ良かったのだが。)


　上の文章の 
　(1) は　if only + 主語 + 過去形　
  (2) は if only + 主語 + had + 過去分詞

　（1）は　「〜すればよいのに」　
　 (2）は　「〜すれば良かったのに」


　気をつける点は　「〜すれば良いのになあ」は文章から現在の願望なのに過去形、

　「〜すれば良かったのになあ」は過去を表わすのに過去完了が用いられる事ですね。



　先日、株に凝っているアメリカの人からこんなメールを貰いました。

　"I was just listening to the news and they said that January 2000 was 

   the worst since 1947.  Wow!  If only I had waited just a few more 

   weeks!  Oh well, I'm not going to beat myself up over it."
