PARIS - In an effort to help slash a double-digit jobless rate, France's
National Assembly has approved legislation that reduces the country's
work week by four hours. The bill goes to the Senate before returning to
the Assembly for final approval. If the legislation passes as expected,
all employers would be required to implement the new 35-hour work week
by 2002. Big business fears shorter hours will destroy jobs.

パリ発 − 二桁の失業率を切り下げるための努力として、フランスの中央議会の
下院は国の労働時間を４時間短縮するという法案を可決した。
その法案は最終決議のために下院に返される前に上院にまわされる。もし、その
法律が期待どおり通過すれば、すべての従業員は２００２年までに新たに週間労
働時間３５時間制を実施することが要求される。
大手企業は短時間労働では事業をやっていけなくなると怖れている。
